According to the National Meteorological Administration, between June 21 at 10:00 AM and June 24 at 9:00 PM, the weather is expected to turn hot across most parts of the country.
Thermal discomfort will be particularly intense in the western and southwestern regions of Romania, and on Wednesday, June 24, in the southern areas as well.
Maximum temperatures will range from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius on the coast and in the depressions of eastern Transylvania, 31 to 33 degrees in the west, northwest, central, southern, and southeastern regions, and could reach up to 35-36 degrees in Banat, Crișana, and the southwestern parts of Oltenia.
Meteorologists warn that these areas are likely to experience heatwave conditions.
Yellow Heatwave Alert on Sunday
For June 21, between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM, a Yellow Alert for exceptionally high temperatures has been issued by ANM.
The alert covers Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, Oltenia, the western and central parts of Transylvania, as well as the western and southwestern portions of Muntenia.
In these areas, maximum temperatures will range from 31-36 degrees Celsius, with the west and southwest feeling the intense heat and significant thermal discomfort.
Storms, Gales, and Hail in Mountainous and Western Areas
Aside from the heatwave, meteorologists are cautioning about severe atmospheric instability.
On Sunday, between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM, the southern Banat, Western Carpathians, and parts of the Southern Carpathians will experience heavy showers, frequent lightning, wind gusts of 50-70 km/h, isolated gales, and hailstones measuring 1-3 centimeters in diameter.
Rainfall amounts could reach 15-25 l/m² and locally exceed 30-40 l/m².
Yellow Alert Continues Monday, June 22
Another Yellow Alert has been issued for Monday, June 22, between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
High Temperatures
Regions affected include Maramureș, the northwest, and northeast of Transylvania.
Maximum temperatures will range from 30 to 34 degrees Celsius, and the temperature-humidity index (THI) is expected to reach the critical threshold of 80 units locally.
New Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain
Also on Monday, Banat, Crișana, the southwest of Transylvania, and both the Western and parts of the Southern Carpathians will experience heavy rain showers, lightning, wind gusts up to 70 km/h, gales, and hail.
Precipitation amounts will locally exceed 30-40 l/m².
Weather Outlook Until Wednesday
Meteorologists predict that atmospheric instability will gradually extend to other regions of the country on Tuesday, June 23—in the southwest, central, northern, and northeastern areas, as well as on Wednesday, June 24—in the central, southern, and southeastern parts of Romania.
These regions are expected to experience periods of heavy rain showers, wind intensifications, lightning, and hailstorms.
