General Gheorghiță Vlad Stands Firm Against Corruption Allegations Without Resigning

General Gheorghiță Vlad, the head of the Romanian Army, has firmly rejected the corruption allegations made against him and has no intention to resign following the charges brought by the DNA (National Anticorruption Directorate). “I categorically reject the accusations brought against me, and I unequivocally state that I have not engaged in any form of corruption, nor have I been involved, either directly or indirectly, in activities that could constitute complicity in such acts,” he declared.

Expressing his trust in the objectivity of the judicial process, General Vlad noted the curious timing of these accusations, especially since the investigation has been ongoing for nearly a year. The decision to charge him has emerged during a particularly sensitive and complex national context.

Under his leadership, the Romanian Army has strengthened its operational capacity and credibility, becoming a cornerstone of stability and professionalism in fulfilling its missions. General Vlad emphasized that damaging the image of the Defense General Staff’s leadership at such a time could have repercussions beyond himself, potentially undermining public confidence in a key institution responsible for national defense and citizens’ safety.

“The entirety of my professional and public life has been guided by respect for the law, integrity, responsibility, and dedication to public interest. These values have steered my career thus far and will continue to guide my conduct in the future,” he stated.

General Vlad assured full cooperation with the judicial authorities, pledging to support them whenever necessary to comprehensively clarify the situation. Concurrently, he remains committed to defending the truth, his reputation, and the image and credibility of the institution he heads.

“In the complex and tense environment we are navigating, safeguarding public trust in the nation’s fundamental institutions is a responsibility to be exercised with utmost seriousness and balance. I am confident that the facts and truth will prevail,” he asserted.

The allegations against General Vlad are part of a broader investigation into favoritism within the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), involving his alleged intervention on behalf of the daughter of Mihai Șomordolea, a former CSAT (Supreme Council of National Defense) secretary, who is also officially charged by the DNA. The accusations include complicity in the misuse of office for personal gain or to benefit others.
