Russia has a chance to reconcile with Europe if it changes its discourse and actions. The Solution for Peace

While many boast about peace, our editorial team will offer a just peace solution, with a much clearer logic than that of Trump and other leaders, providing a lucid look at the situation of the war in Ukraine and its implications for Romania.

A Crazy War: A Complex Analysis of the Conflict in Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 represented a flagrant violation of international law, altering borders by force and calling into question the principles of state sovereignty. This action, while not unusual in the history of Russia’s reliance on force as a dominant instrument, has triggered a wave of global condemnation. Beyond the evident brutality, a form of sadism is discernible through the bombardment of civilian targets. The question is whether this action stems from a generalized lack of reason or a desire for revenge.

Undoubtedly, leaders like Putin and Lavrov appear to operate with their own logic, devoid of empathy and reason, using force and disregarding international norms. But how does President Zelensky’s radical discourse fit into this picture? What exactly triggered this spiral of violence that threatens global peace?

Beyond Aggression: Ukraine’s Role and Historical Context

While Ukraine is, without a doubt, the victim of an unprovoked aggression, a balanced analysis also necessitates a look at some controversial aspects of its actions. There have been accusations regarding breaches of agreements with Western partners concerning the use of supplied weapons, as well as military actions on Russian territory, such as in the Kursk region. Information about the loss of Patriot systems requires careful verification but suggests risky management of received military equipment.

To fully understand the context, it’s essential to look retrospectively. Since declaring independence from the USSR, Ukraine has pursued a path of regaining its sovereignty. However, there have also been tendencies to claim territories historically considered its own, but which were previously part of Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Romania, following Soviet annexations. These claims were accompanied by a nationalistic policy that, in the perception of some minorities and Russia, suppressed the rights to manifest national identity. The annexation of Snake Island, for example, was validated by the International Court of Justice, but this precedent is perceived by some as dangerous, especially in the context of the Crimea situation, where Russia could invoke a similar principle of “usucaption” (long-term possession leading to ownership) for its annexation. This historical aspect, combined with accusations of violating minority rights (such as the closure of Romanian schools or the banning of certain branches of the Orthodox Church), contributed to regional tension and was instrumentalized by Russia to justify its aggression.

Friction with Neighbors and Geopolitical Repercussions

The dispute over the Bâstroe Canal is an eloquent example of the tensions between Ukraine and its neighbors. Ukraine’s dredging activities, ignoring Romania’s repeated requests to respect the Danube Delta environment and good neighborly agreements, have created a constant source of friction. The recent incident with a Ukrainian vessel hitting a mine while dredging underscores the risks of these operations in the conflict zone. Furthermore, accusations regarding a Ukrainian air squadron entering Romanian airspace, if confirmed, would represent a new provocation.

These tensions raise serious questions about the nature of relations between Ukraine and neighboring states, including Romania, especially in the context of military support provided. It is understandable that, in the face of actions perceived as hostile, questions arise about the continuation of assistance.

An Opportunity for Redefining International Relations?

Russia, although it has no right to strike Ukraine and has invented absurd pretexts to justify its thirst for conquest, has made, through Medvedev’s voice, a proposal worth analyzing: a negotiation table with states that have historical territorial claims on Ukraine. While this seems to contradict the principles of modern international law, based on treaties and not on force, the current context is one of war.

A hypothetical scenario in which Russia would change its approach, recognizing the abusive annexations of the USSR and proposing the restitution of these territories to Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania, could fundamentally change the perception of the war. If such an initiative were accompanied by a withdrawal from Transnistria, it could build a path towards a historical justification for its war and might even make Russia “beloved” in the eyes of Eastern Europe. Such a materialization would close a dark chapter in history and could lead to the lifting of EU sanctions. The question is whether Moscow’s politicians are capable of such understanding and vision.

Although some might consider this analysis a form of propaganda, it aims to offer a realistic and logical perspective, based on discernment that could, ultimately, contribute to the reestablishment of peace in the region. It is a thought exercise that seeks to find a way out of a complex conflict, acknowledging both the aggressor’s responsibility and the nuances of the actions of all parties involved.
