Cătălin Predoiu consistently argued, alongside other party members, for the PNL’s involvement in government, emphasizing that Romania required a functional executive branch and political stability.
“For over a month, I and other colleagues in the PNL have consistently advocated for the party’s participation in governance because Romania needs a government with full powers, and without the PNL, it’s nearly impossible. The PNL is the solution to the political crisis, not AUR,” Predoiu stated.
He warned that prolonging the political deadlock risked undermining the confidence of financial markets and the economic environment.
“Financial markets and the economic landscape might lose patience, and the ongoing uncertainty has generated costs and risks we can’t afford,” added the liberal leader.
“Public Interest Must Come First”
Predoiu acknowledged that the majority of the PNL leadership had recently supported transitioning the party into opposition and avoiding collaboration with the PSD, but he held a different view.
“I held a distinct belief: in challenging times for the country, public interest must take precedence. The evolving context presented some of us with a tough dilemma: to act on the conviction that the country urgently needs a government or to align our beliefs with party directives,” he explained.
The former minister also welcomed the recent shift in the liberal leadership’s stance, supporting the formation of a new executive.

Cătălin Predoiu clarified that at the time of the vote, it was already apparent that the Veștea Government lacked sufficient support in Parliament, but he aimed to send a political message about the urgent need to form a government.
“I knew the government wouldn’t pass as there weren’t enough votes in the room. I chose to highlight, once again, the country’s need for a government,” he explained.
Moreover, the liberal leader conveyed that he is prepared to accept any sanctions from the party.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m ready to accept these consequences. I’m asking nothing from anyone. I will not challenge a potential party decision to exclude me. I’ll accept it, won’t comment on it, and will continue my public activity under the given circumstances,” Predoiu declared.
Call for Dialogue for Liberals Facing Sanctions
