A German non-profit organization is rescuing sheep that are typically culled for not being considered economically viable for breeding purposes, according to People.
Known as the Rainbow Wool project, this initiative has garnered international attention and evolved into a campaign to raise awareness about diversity and LGBTQ+ rights.
Being a ‘Gay Sheep’ Pays Off
Launched in 2023 by farmer Michael Stücke, who has been raising sheep for nearly thirty years, the project was inspired by a conversation with his friend, Nadia Leytes. She discovered that rams refusing to mate with ewes are usually sent to slaughter because they don’t offer economic benefits to farmers.
It is estimated that about 8% of rams display exclusively homosexual behavior. To save these animals, Stücke reached out to livestock breeders, encouraging them to send such rams to his farm, where they live freely alongside other animals with similar behavior.
Careful Observation of Homosexual Rams
The farmer mentions that the project was initially met with skepticism, but over time, more people began to understand its purpose.
To prevent mistakes, rams are observed during the mating season before being integrated into the Rainbow Wool flock.
The project gained significant attention in 2025 when the gay dating app Grindr proposed a collaboration to promote the initiative.
A Unique Partnership
The partnership was solidified through a fashion show in New York, showcasing creations made from the wool of the rescued sheep.
The collection was designed by Michael Schmidt, noted for his collaborations with artists like Madonna, Cher, and Hailey Bieber.
The NGO Shearing Gay Sheep and Rams
Schmidt expressed his enthusiasm for the project, seeing it as a metaphor for how homosexuality continues to be stigmatized in many parts of the world.
The Rainbow Wool founders emphasize that their goal is not just to save animals but also to initiate a conversation about embracing diversity.
They hope the story of their farm will increase awareness about discrimination in a unique yet widely accessible manner.
