In a show of solidarity, Paraguay’s president reached out to the French president, denouncing the offensive comments, echoing a similar sentiment from Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Following the match, the French president praised Kylian Mbappé on social media for scoring “yet another goal,” this time “against racism.” He asserted his complete support by saying, “When words degrade, our values stand strong: dignity, respect, fraternity.”
Senator Celeste Amarilla launched a vehement attack on the Blues’ superstar after her country’s defeat (1-0), disparaging him as an “idiot” who “hasn’t even learned to write” and labeling him a “colonial-era Cameroonian trying desperately to appear French.”
Paraguayan Government Condemns Senator’s Remarks Against Mbappé
On Monday, the Paraguayan government officially condemned these statements. “The comments made by Senator Celeste Amarilla are contrary to the values and principles that promote peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity, which our nation upholds,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. The statement emphasized that these remarks “stem solely from her individual responsibility” and “do not in any way represent the stance of the government of the Republic of Paraguay or its people.”
In response, Kylian Mbappé referred to the senator as “a vile woman unworthy of her position.” He firmly stated, “I will never allow individuals like her to freely spread hatred and racism across the globe.”
