Ali Khamenei, who governed Iran for nearly 37 years, passed away during joint American and Israeli airstrikes that triggered conflict on February 28. His burial took place in Mashhad, his hometown, on Friday morning following several days of public mourning, according to reports.
Khamenei is the second leader of the nation to be buried in the city; back in 1747, Nader Shah was interred there after being assassinated following an 11-year rule.
Funeral processions began on Saturday, with authorities closing roads, restricting airspace, and halting daily life in Tehran and other cities as crowds gathered to honor the man who led Iran for decades, often in opposition to the West.
The funeral of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was designed to showcase unity in a deeply divided country due to his long reign. Supporters filled the streets to honor a leader they viewed as a martyr who defied Western nations and Israel.
However, Khamenei’s prolonged leadership left large segments of Iranian society disillusioned. His regime oversaw increasingly brutal crackdowns, economic stagnation, and the empowerment of the Revolutionary Guards. Deep-seated anger and despair persist, particularly after a January crackdown that resulted in thousands of deaths.
Ali Khamenei’s Son, Mojtaba, Notably Absent from the Funeral
Mojtaba Khamenei, the supreme leader’s son, was absent from all public appearances at his father’s funeral, raising questions among observers about his leadership capabilities during a critical time for the Islamic Republic.
It remains unclear why he avoided the events, including his father’s own burial, but experts suggest that security concerns are the most likely reason for his absence.
