During a press conference in St. Petersburg, Putin informed journalists that one of the Nord Stream 2 pipelines remains undamaged and could begin delivering gas “as soon as tomorrow,” based on reports.
“I’m not joking, it’s just a matter of pressing a button and the gas will start flowing. However, this requires a decision by the German government,” he stated.
Putin noted that the Nord Stream pipeline is currently under U.S. sanctions, and Germany would need to negotiate an agreement to lift these restrictions.
He mentioned that Russia is capable of supplying up to 28 billion cubic meters annually, “but we only need a clear response from our German partners to Gazprom: whether they will take the gas or not. Otherwise, we will redirect it to other markets and sell to different partners.”
Putin made these remarks to international news agencies at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, where a significant member of Germany’s far-right AfD party met with Russian officials on Wednesday, advocating for the reopening of Nord Stream.
Before the Ukraine conflict, Germany and Russia enjoyed a close energy relationship. However, the Russian invasion in February 2022 severed these ties, forcing Berlin to seek alternative energy sources.
