From daily office wear to evening gowns, handbags, and elegant outfits, fashion enthusiasts now have the option to rent clothing for any occasion. Once used, these garments are returned to be enjoyed by others, as reported by the Associated Press.
“I haven’t bought anything for a special occasion since 2019,” shared Sasha Eck, an American who frequently utilizes clothing rental services.
She prefers renting because it offers her ongoing access to the latest fashion trends. Renting a formal outfit, for example, makes more sense to her financially. Purchasing a dress could cost as much as her monthly rent, yet she would likely wear it only once.
Most People Buy Outfits for Single Use
A survey by ThredUp indicates that many others face similar dilemmas. According to the survey, 87% of wedding guests admitted to purchasing at least one outfit they wore just once.
Clothing rental services present an environmentally friendly and ethical alternative. A single garment can be worn by multiple individuals instead of being abandoned in a closet.
Kate Fletcher, a professor of sustainability, design, and fashion systems at Manchester Metropolitan University, mentioned that rental services might sometimes promote the same mindset that drives fast fashion.
“In theory, the resources invested in that piece of clothing have a chance to be utilized more extensively since it is worn by many people. This is indeed a compelling argument,” Fletcher stated.
Is Clothing Rental Similar to Fast Fashion?
However, some critics point out that the rental or resale of clothes through apps can foster the same mentality seen in fast fashion.
“You don’t think about the packaging that comes with every delivery, the carbon footprint from shipping, or the carbon footprint from dry cleaning,” says Aja Barber, a sustainability consultant.
She noted, however, that in-store clothing rental services, where customers directly pick up and return items, have a vastly different profile compared to modern app-based rental services.
What Can Fashion Enthusiasts Do?
Experts suggest that renting clothing can be a good option for specific occasions, especially when it comes to unique outfits worn only once at special events. Nonetheless, they emphasize that people should be mindful of how frequently they use such services.
Kate Fletcher from Manchester Metropolitan University advises fashion lovers to “first check their own wardrobes before deciding to rent a new piece.”
