Siegfried Mureșan, a PNL MEP and vice-president of the European People’s Party, has been nominated as a candidate for prime minister during recent consultations at Cotroceni. If appointed and confirmed by Parliament, Mureșan would have to vacate his MEP seat, as holding a government position is incompatible with being a member of the European Parliament.
According to the law, when a seat in the European Parliament becomes vacant, it is filled by the next candidate on the same electoral list, in the order they were listed, subject to confirmation by the party.
In this scenario, the seat would be filled from the joint PSD-PNL list from the 2024 European elections. After Siegfried Mureșan, the list includes Virgil Popescu, Andi Cristea, Alexandru Muraru, Andra Bică, and Mara Mareș. Since Andi Cristea is already serving as an MEP, the next available candidate would be Alexandru Muraru.
Who is Alexandru Muraru?

Muraru is currently serving as a PNL deputy, so accepting an MEP seat would require him to leave the Romanian Parliament. Should he decline or not be confirmed, the next candidate on the list is Andra Bică, from PSD. Following her is Mara Mareș, representing PNL.
Although Siegfried Mureșan is a PNL MEP, the vacant seat does not automatically remain with the Liberals; it is allocated in the order of the joint PSD-PNL list. Consequently, if Alexandru Muraru were to refuse the position, the seat could be passed to PSD through Andra Bică.
Siegfried Mureșan is currently serving his third term in the European Parliament and is one of the most prominent Liberal figures in Brussels. He serves as vice-president of the EPP Group, a member of the Committee on Budgets, and the head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Moldova.
