President Nicușor Dan shared his views following the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. During a session with Romanian journalists, he addressed the ongoing governmental crisis in Bucharest.
Dan emphasized that he will not nominate a prime minister who lacks the potential to secure a parliamentary majority.
“I won’t propose a candidate for prime minister if I know they have no chance of securing a majority (…) When I put forward Eugen Tomac, I had a reasonable expectation that this technocrat government would be approved (…) Similarly, with Mr. Veștea, changes occurred after our discussions,” Nicușor Dan explained.
President Dan’s Pessimism
The president announced that a new round of talks with political party leaders is scheduled for Monday at the Cotroceni Palace. He expressed skepticism about the outcome of these upcoming discussions.
“I no longer hold a reasonable expectation that any specific proposal will be successful,” Dan stated.
Furthermore, he refrained from outlining his course of action should the politicians fail to reach an agreement soon.
“A parliamentary majority does not rest with the president; the responsibility lies with the parties. You should ask them (the political party leaders) for their majority proposal,” Nicușor Dan advised journalists.
President’s Insights Post-NATO Summit
The NATO summit took place on Tuesday and Wednesday in Ankara. President Nicușor Dan announced on Wednesday that Romania’s defense and security spending will reach a cumulative 3.7% of GDP this year.
He also noted that Romania has joined NATO’s “Drone Edge” initiative, aimed at joint drone acquisitions by allied nations, and will continue to strengthen its role in ensuring security in the Black Sea region.
