UK Government Commits £250 Million to Safeguard Jewish Communities

About 500 additional officers will be deployed to areas with significant Jewish populations across the UK, including 300 in London, where there will be increased patrols outside synagogues and schools, along with plainclothes officers. “The rise in antisemitism we’ve witnessed over recent years has tested our nation’s values,” stated outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as quoted in a Home Office statement.

The £250 million fund (approximately €293 million) will be allocated over three years, with some of the funding dedicated to combating antisemitism, particularly through educational initiatives. “Jewish communities face an extraordinary threat, with an increase in hate crimes, terrorism, and interference from hostile states,” explained Matt Jukes, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London, in a statement.

Increase in Attacks Targeting Jewish Community

At the end of April, two Jewish men were stabbed in the Golders Green area of London, an incident police have classified as terrorism. Additionally, since late March, a series of arson attacks and attempts have targeted synagogues in northwest London, a region with a large Jewish community.

In October 2025, an attack claimed the lives of two individuals at a synagogue in Manchester. Around £59 million (approximately €69 million) will be designated for counter-terrorism policing to “enhance security and counter state threats,” according to the ministry.

Following the Golders Green attack, Keir Starmer vowed to take action “to address the threat posed by states like Iran,” expressing his awareness that “they intend to harm British Jews.” The UK subsequently raised the terrorist threat level to “severe” after the attack.

Mark Gardner, CEO of the Jewish organization Community Security Trust (CST), welcomed this “significant increase” in police resources during what he described as “a critical period for the future of British Jews.”
