The National Political Bureau of the PNL has resolved, during a meeting on Wednesday, to hold an Extraordinary National Council of the party on Friday, June 19, at 17:00, in an online format. The main agenda is to convene the Extraordinary Congress of the party on June 21, at 12:00, at Romexpo in Bucharest.
According to a press release by the PNL, this decision was made following a proposal by the party’s president, Ilie Bolojan.
“PNL President Ilie Bolojan stated during the BPN meeting that the liberals must respond swiftly and decisively to developments impacting the party. This will ensure that PNL reaffirms its political direction, clarifies its message, and maintains credibility with its members, supporters, and the Romanian public,” the press release notes.
The agenda for the Extraordinary National Council on Friday, which expects approximately 800 delegates, includes approving the convening of the Extraordinary Congress on June 21 and the amendment of the National Liberal Party’s statute.
“For the party’s Extraordinary Congress, proposed for Sunday, June 21, 2026, 2,500 delegates from across the country will be invited. This includes 500 delegates by right and 2,000 delegates elected by party organizations from territories. The agenda for the PNL’s Extraordinary Congress will be determined on Friday during the Extraordinary National Council,” the PNL announcement adds.
This initiative follows the designation of Adrian Veștea as the proposed prime minister for forming the government, despite PNL’s call for him to step down, and after UDMR announced its decision not to join the government.
