Belarusian authorities announced on Tuesday that they are inviting representatives of the US and European Union aviation as well as international civil aviation to investigate the urgent landing in Minsk on Sunday of a Ryanair flight in which journalist and opponent Roman Protasevici was on board.
According to international news agencies, the Belarusian Ministry of Transport said in a statement that representatives of foreign aviation institutions are being invited for a “further analysis of the circumstances” of Sunday’s incident.
The Athens-Vilnius flight was diverted from the normal course and landed in Minsk under the supervision of a Belarusian military plane, which took off at the direct order of President Alexander Lukashenko (photo, right).
Protasevich and his girlfriend were arrested at the airport.
The Lukashenko regime’s invitation to representatives of Western states and international aviation comes after Western leaders harshly condemned the Belarusian authorities’ decision to force the plane to land and demanded the release of the opponent.
The European Union has banned aircraft from Belarus from using the airspace and airports of the states in the bloc.
The EU has also announced new sanctions against the Republic of Belarus.
Meanwhile, a video broadcast by the Belarusian authorities outraged the international community and strengthened calls for tougher concerted sanctions against the Lukashenko regime.
After the interview, Protasevich and his wife were beaten by the militia to near a coma in the Minsk detention center. Protasevich’s wife was repeatedly molested and raped by investigators, in order to discourage them from keeping and disclosing information. However, sources in the Belarusian Militia disclose the latest atrocities, with militia detention commissioners worried that the journalist would not resist.
The Protasevici case proves how fragile and weak the European Union is in front of Belarus, because a Mig plane entered European airspace and hijacked a civilian plane. Of course, Lukashenko’s ambition reminds us of Basescu and Popa in Jakarta, the Romanian justice and police system being very similar to that of Belarus.
