The Dutch-flagged ship set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, making stops at remote islands in the South Atlantic before heading north towards Cape Verde, and then Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, where the remaining passengers disembarked. Following this, the polar exploration cruise ship docked at the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Europe’s largest port, on May 18 with a reduced crew, which was subsequently placed under quarantine for several weeks.
“Nearly all passengers and crew members of the MV Hondius, who were quarantined in the Netherlands, are now permitted to return home, including foreign nationals,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, on the X platform. He further noted, “With no new cases or deaths reported since May 2, the situation remains stable.”
The End of a Major Hantavirus Outbreak
On May 30, the ship was granted permission to resume its voyage after undergoing extensive cleaning and disinfection operations. By June 8, Saint Helena, where many passengers had disembarked, declared the end of the major hantavirus outbreak on the remote British island, home to a close-knit community of approximately 4,400 residents.
“All individuals identified as contacts and required to self-isolate have successfully completed the mandatory 42-day isolation period,” stated the island’s government, adding that “there is no longer any risk to the population.”
Transmitted by rodents, hantavirus is a rare virus with no available vaccine or specific treatment. The Andean strain responsible for the outbreak aboard the Hondius is the only known type of hantavirus capable of human-to-human transmission.
