Just three days before the presidential runoff election, 99 members of the Bolivarian National Coordination Army (CNEB) gathered in a designated area deep in the Putumayo jungle, as witnessed by AFP. Clad in camouflage, they symbolically laid down their rifles into a large container labeled “Bet on Life, I Keep My Promise for Peace,” under the watchful eyes of international organizations and the Catholic Church.
The CNEB, a dissident group that previously signed a historic peace agreement with the Colombian state in 2016, remains the only guerrilla faction continuing peace talks initiated by Petro since the beginning of his term in 2022. Meanwhile, leftist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitary forces, and drug trafficking gangs have all withdrawn from negotiations.
“This is a very strong and evocative message for Colombian society, especially at a time when discussions about war are prevalent and global violence is on the rise,” stated Armando Novoa, head of the government delegation for peace with the CNEB.
The guerrillas are required to stay on these lands—previously used for coca cultivation—for ten months, during which time they will undergo disarmament and await clarification of their legal status.
