In a nighttime offensive from Friday to Saturday, Israel launched strikes on Lebanon, resulting in at least 16 fatalities. The attacks occurred shortly after a ceasefire with Hezbollah was to take effect, with Israel claiming the actions were in retaliation to missiles fired by the Iran-backed group.
Lebanon’s Civil Defense reported that an additional 12 individuals were injured due to Israeli strikes on the city of Nabatieh and nearby villages in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military confirmed the strikes, justifying them as a response to Hezbollah’s launch of over 50 rockets at Israeli forces, according to an official from the IDF cited by sources.
The attacks came merely hours after a ceasefire was announced between Israel and Hezbollah on Friday. This ceasefire was reportedly part of a broader agreement brokered by the United States and Iran, aiming to halt hostilities “on all fronts” of the regional conflict, including in Lebanon.
According to POLITICO, the joint U.S.-Israel operation targeting Iran has immediately heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, with Hezbollah launching rockets into northern Israel and the IDF conducting military operations within Lebanese territory.
