On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted on Truth Social that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni repeatedly requested to take a photograph with him during the G7 summit held in France this week.
“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni persistently asked for a photo together during the G7 meeting in France,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
Trump further criticized the Italian leader, claiming Meloni is “struggling with popularity in Italy.” He accused Italy and “other so-called NATO allies” of failing to provide military support during the U.S. and Israel’s bombing campaign against Iran.
“Now, after the United States has militarily defeated Iran, she wants to rekindle our friendship to boost her numbers. No, thank you!” Trump added in his post.
Strained Relations Between Trump and Meloni
On Friday, the U.S. leader mentioned in an interview with La7 that ? for a photo at the G7 summit. He expressed some sympathy for the Italian Prime Minister.
In response, Giorgia Meloni dismissed Trump’s claims as entirely fabricated. In a video posted on social media, she expressed her dismay at the American president’s conduct towards allies.
The conflict between the two leaders began in the spring when Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV for his calls for peace in the Middle East. Meloni sided with the Pope, deeming Trump’s statements unacceptable.
