Kelemen Hunor Urges Political Parties to Settle Differences Amid Public Discontent

In a recent Facebook post, Kelemen Hunor expressed that the public is fed up with the ongoing political “circus” and the prevailing uncertainty.

Call to Action for Government Formation

Over the past few days, regardless of whom I’ve spoken with, the primary question has been: when will our country finally have a government? People are tired of this spectacle, frustrated by the uncertainty, and demand: find a solution,” wrote the UDMR leader.

Hunor acknowledged that the public’s frustration is warranted, as they did not create the problem and deserve a functioning nation.

Now is not the time to dwell on who made mistakes, but rather to find common ground. In past negotiations, I told my colleagues from PSD, PNL, and USR: let’s put aside grievances and work tirelessly to find a resolution,” added Kelemen Hunor.

He cautioned that if political parties fail to reach a consensus, public anger could turn against them, rendering the country ungovernable.

“If we don’t find a solution, public anger will target us. An even bigger issue is that the country could become ungovernable,” he warned.

Warning About Prolonged Political Crisis

The UDMR president emphasized that extending the crisis only benefits those without any solutions.

“The longer this crisis is prolonged, the stronger those become who, in reality, have no solutions. George Simion doesn’t need to do anything now: he just watches the game, snacks on popcorn, sips a beer, and his party’s popularity grows regardless,” he observed.

Hunor pointed out that, in the meantime, Romania remains stagnant without a fully empowered government.

“Meanwhile, the country is at a standstill. Without a government with full powers, ministries are paralyzed, emergency ordinances can’t be passed, new laws cannot be initiated, and Romania risks losing European funds. Whatever is lost must be compensated from other sources: through loans or austerity measures,” stated the UDMR leader.

UDMR’s Stance on AUR

He asserted that while UDMR is open to discussing “any responsible solution” with PSD, PNL, and USR, it categorically rules out any scenario involving the endorsement of AUR.

“At UDMR, our stance is straightforward. We can consider any responsible solution with PSD, PNL, and USR. However, we will not partake in rendering the extremist, anti-Hungarian AUR a legitimate or acceptable party,” clarified Kelemen Hunor.

The UDMR leader also referenced Hannah Arendt while discussing the “banalization of evil”.

“Accepting evil always begins with a small step. It starts when you first accept the lesser evil, thinking you have a rational explanation for it. Then you take another step toward it. And another. This is how evil becomes routine, eventually becoming part of our lives. We must not allow this. We can still prevent it now,” Kelemen Hunor cautioned.

The solution lies within PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR. It must be found,” concluded the UDMR president.

Two-Month Political Stalemate

Romania has been engulfed in a political crisis for nearly two months since PSD withdrew its support for the government led by Ilie Bolojan and, in conjunction with AUR, submitted a motion of no confidence.

The Bolojan government was ousted on May 5, following the adoption of the motion in Parliament with 281 votes in favor.

Following the government’s collapse, President Nicușor Dan initiated consultations to form a new majority. The first candidate for prime minister, Eugen Tomac, failed to garner adequate support.

Subsequently, the president nominated Adrian Veștea for the premier role, but his proposed government was rejected by Parliament, receiving only 189 votes.

On Wednesday, a proposal was made to establish a “truce government” to break the political deadlock.
