Preliminary official results indicate that Abelardo de la Espriella is set to win the election with 49.7% of the vote, edging out Ivan Cepeda, who garnered 48.7%, according to reports.
The president-elect will assume office on August 7 for a four-year term. Approximately 41 million voters participated in this crucial election, which unfolded against the backdrop of a resurgence in violence in a nation that has been embroiled in internal armed conflict for over six decades.
On social media platform X, Abelardo de la Espriella celebrated a victory he described as filling him with both gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for our country,” he declared.
Thank you, Colombia! 🫡

Vowing to strengthen ties between Bogotá and Washington, De la Espriella noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his “support.” Colombia joins the ranks of Latin American countries like Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador, which have recently shifted toward the political right.
Celebrations Erupt in the Streets
The streets of several Colombian cities were filled with supporters of the 47-year-old millionaire, clad in the yellow jerseys of the national soccer team that he had popularized during his campaign rallies.
Carrying flags and honking horns, they voiced their hopes that the man they call “The Tiger” would deliver security following a campaign overshadowed by guerrilla attacks and the assassination of a presidential candidate.
Rival Awaits Final Count
Addressing his supporters in Bogotá, Ivan Cepeda asserted that he would not concede until the final count is completed, which is expected to take several days, and intends to challenge the results from 33,000 polling stations.
Abelardo de la Espriella’s meteoric rise was fueled by a fervent discourse against guerrillas and the left, which held power for the first time in Colombia’s history under President Petro. His opponent, Senator Cepeda, was primarily supported by the working class, who were appreciative of the poverty reduction and higher wages achieved under Petro, in one of the world’s most unequal countries.
