The commemoration event is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026, starting at 9:30 AM at the Jewish Cemetery in Păcurari.
This occasion marks the 85th anniversary of the Iași Pogrom and will be the 12th edition of this remembrance series. The events will take place from June 27 to June 29, 2026, organized by the Iași City Hall in partnership with the Jewish Community of Iași.
President of Israel to Attend the Commemoration
Iași City Hall has announced that this year’s edition will be graced by the presence of His Excellency, Mr. Isaac Herzog, the President of the State of Israel.
The March of Life was initiated by Rabbi Josef Wasserman from Israel, who is the president of the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Judaism in Romania.
According to the City Hall, Iași was among the first cities in Romania to host a Jewish community, which significantly contributed to the development of commerce, arts, medicine, sciences, and architectural heritage.
The institution highlights that the world’s first Yiddish theater, “Pomul Verde,” operated in Iași, in the area of what is now the Theater Park.
The Iași City Hall stated that the March of Life is “a moment of acknowledgment of the past,” as well as a reaffirmation of the values of a democratic society: respect for human dignity, tolerance, dialogue, and the rejection of hatred and discrimination.
“Additionally, the event provides an opportunity to look confidently toward a future built on mutual respect, understanding, and solidarity,” emphasized the Iași City Hall.
The Iași Pogrom occurred during World War II, between June 27 and June 30, 1941, and was one of the largest anti-Semitic massacres in Romania. Over 13,000 Jews were killed in the city or died in the “death trains” after being deported under horrific conditions.
