3,000 Euros per Hectare: New Garlic Cultivation Subsidy Approved for 2026

On May 21, 2026, the government approved a new support program for garlic farmers, reinstating a financial aid scheme aimed at boosting this agricultural sector. This initiative addresses the current trade deficit in garlic and aims to expand cultivated areas while enhancing domestic production, according to source R.

The program’s total budget amounts to 60,000,000 lei, with payments to beneficiaries scheduled by December 22, 2026. Authorities emphasize that the program is not only about increasing garlic production but also about sustaining farmers, especially in traditional growing regions where garlic plays a crucial economic role.

Agricultural Sector Facing Trade Challenges

“We’re reviving support for garlic producers in a sector with a negative trade balance. Today’s initiative focuses on expanding garlic cultivation areas and increasing production, encouraging farmers to persist in traditional agricultural activities,” stated Tánczos Barna, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Agriculture. He also highlighted the need for fair treatment across other impacted sectors, like potatoes, which lacked support last year despite challenges from imports and price drops.

Under the approved scheme, financial support of 3,000 euros per hectare is available for areas ranging from a minimum of 3,000 square meters to a maximum of 6 hectares per beneficiary. Additionally, farmers must achieve a yield of at least 3.5 tons per hectare to qualify for the subsidy.

Eligibility for Financial Aid

Applications to join the program must be submitted within 10 days following the government’s decision coming into effect. Eligible recipients include individual farmers, authorized natural persons (PFA), individual and family enterprises, as well as legal entities.

Inspections will be conducted on-site by teams from the County Agricultural Departments and the Agency for Payments and Intervention in Agriculture. These evaluations will confirm the cultivated surface areas, the presence of crops before harvest, and plant density.

Harvesting and marketing of the produce must occur after inspections and by November 23, 2026, at the latest. Justifying documents for the marketing of products can be submitted until November 24, 2026.

Authorities believe that the support provided through this scheme could balance the incomes and expenses of agricultural producers, elevate the standard of living in rural areas, and prevent depopulation by maintaining jobs and attracting young people to farming.
