Majority of EU Citizens and Britons Support Rejoining the EU Post-Brexit

A survey conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) from May 7-14, 2026, reveals that 66% of respondents from 15 European countries believe that the UK’s membership in the EU was a very good, good, or neutral decision.

Support for the UK rejoining the EU varies, ranging from a low of 56% in Bulgaria and 59% in France and Italy, to a high of 75% in the Netherlands and Denmark, according to the report.

Even voters from far-right parties express support for closer ties between the EU and the UK. This includes a significant majority of backers from Poland’s Confederation (71%), Germany’s AfD (58%), and France’s Rassemblement National (58%).

On the possibility of the UK returning to the EU, French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the door is “always open,” while Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has assured that Spain would “undoubtedly” support the UK’s re-accession.

Britons Reflect on Brexit’s Negative Impact

According to the data, British voters from all political backgrounds feel that Brexit has had a negative effect on the country and on many key issues that were central to debates a decade ago.

British respondents highlighted that leaving the EU has adversely affected the cost of living (66%), the economy (65%), opportunities for young people (57%), illegal immigration (56%), and trade (56%). Notably, even 58% of those who voted for Brexit acknowledged that the exit has worsened the issue of illegal immigration.

Among those who consider immigration their primary concern, 44% support free movement as part of a closer economic relationship. This suggests that illegal immigration, a critical factor in the Brexit vote, is no longer at the forefront of UK debates.

Additionally, 75% of British participants in the survey expressed their support for the UK rejoining the EU.

On June 23, 2016, the UK held a referendum on EU membership, resulting in 51.89% of voters deciding that the country should leave the EU.
